Our own test
We're buying things with crypto cards in AUD, USD, EUR and GBP from October and comparing what each card takes with the mid-market rate. What this card actually charges will show here and in our Q4 report.

Our research notes
Pass 2, 27 Sep 2026: verified against binding documents opened and saved on 27 Sep 2026. US FEES: the Pathward cardholder agreement and Long Form fee list (file dated 14 Oct 2024, linked from coinbase.com/legal/coinbasecard) price card purchase, monthly fee, card transactions, crypto conversion, ATM withdrawals and international transactions at $0, and the Pathward short form says 'We charge 0 other types of fees'. FX is therefore 0% for the US card (verified). CONVERSION: no fee, but when you spend crypto Coinbase sells it at the prevailing rate on its platform, and the US user agreement says Coinbase 'will not charge transaction fees but will include a spread'. The spread size is not published (verify with a real transaction); spending USD or USDC avoids it, so no conversion fee is modelled. REWARDS: the US user agreement (updated 22 Jul 2026) still includes the card rewards programme, and the reward equals the purchase price times a 'Rewards Percentage which will be published within the Coinbase Card Portal from time to time'. Coinbase's pages say 'Reward rate is variable. Check your app for the most updated rate.' No public rate exists, so the only plan is 0% under the rule for unpublished rates. Reviews quote about 1% on BTC or ETH and up to 4% on some altcoins, but these describe past months and were not verified. REGIONS: US residents excluding Hawaii (US cardholder agreement and card page). UK: the UK card page says the card 'is available for all Coinbase customers who live in the UK', issued by Paysafe Financial Services Limited, with 'no fees for spending Pound Sterling'. EEA: the EEA user agreement (effective Aug to Oct 2025 by country) keeps the card appendix with Paysafe Payment Solutions Limited as issuer, and Coinbase's UK and German help list all 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. UK and EEA cards have no rewards clause in their binding terms, so 0% applies there too. Coinbase does not publish the UK or EEA charge for spending in a currency other than pounds or euros (one 2025 review claims 2.49% for the EEA card, not verified); the model treats UK and EEA residents as spending local currency, so this does not change their results. Listing UK and EU is a pass 2 change and needs the founder's sign-off. NOT VERIFIED: the spread on crypto spending, the UK and EEA foreign-currency charge, UK and EEA limits, and whether Apple Pay and Google Pay still work on the US card (last confirmed in a June 2021 Coinbase blog post).
What's good and what to watch
Good
- No card fee, monthly fee or spending fee, and no credit check
- US card: 0% on purchases in other currencies under the Pathward fee list
- Spending your cash balance or USDC avoids a crypto sale and its spread
- US cardholders earn rotating crypto rewards on purchases
Watch
- Coinbase does not publish the US rewards rate, so the kept rate here is 0% and any rewards are upside you cannot plan on
- Spending crypto other than USDC sells it at a price that includes an unpublished spread
- UK and EEA cards pay no rewards and do not work with Apple Pay or Google Pay
- US card not available in Hawaii; US purchases are capped at $2,500 a day
- Custodial: your balance sits with Coinbase
