Our own test

We're buying things with crypto cards in AUD, USD, EUR and GBP from October and comparing what each card takes with the mid-market rate. What this card actually charges will show here and in our Q4 report.

Where these numbers come from

Our research notes

VERIFIED 2026-09-27 from Coinbase's own pages via search results (not opened directly): the Rewards Program Terms (coinbase.com/legal/creditcard/rewards), the card page (coinbase.com/creditcard), the help centre (benefits, travel portal, digital wallets, security deposit) and the Cardless cardholder agreement effective 11 May 2026. REWARDS: bitcoin back is tiered by Assets on Coinbase (AOC) when a purchase is initiated: 2% under $10,000, 2.5% from $10,000 to $49,999.99, 3% from $50,000 to $199,999.99, 4% at $200,000+. The 2.5%, 3% and 4% rates apply to a combined $10,000 of eligible purchases per calendar month, then 2%. AOC is the real-time balance for the first 60 days after account opening, then the average of daily end-of-day balances over the past 30 days. Cash advances, cash equivalents and gambling earn nothing. MODELLING: each AOC tier is a plan, with the asset threshold as requiresStake (these are USD figures, so no token price is needed). Reviews say USD and USDC balances count toward AOC, so the engine's token-depreciation assumption on a stake overstates the cost of holding stablecoins; with willingToStake off the engine uses Tier 1 only. Every plan carries the $49.99/yr Coinbase One Basic annual fee, because an active paid membership is required to open and keep the card and to earn rewards; Basic monthly ($4.99/mo) does not qualify, and Preferred ($29.99/mo) and Premium ($299.99/mo) also qualify at higher cost. Travel portal (5%) and Amex Offers are category or merchant rewards and are not in the tiers. FEES: no card annual fee and no foreign transaction fee per the official card page; the cardholder agreement's own text only says a foreign transaction fee would be listed in the Truth in Lending fee table, and that table was not seen directly, so FX 0% is MED-HIGH (official page via search, several reviews agree). Purchase APR Prime + 12.74% to Prime + 22.74%, cash advance APR Prime + 25.49%, late fee up to $41 (cardholder agreement via search). NETWORK: the card runs on American Express, which the site's network field does not yet support, so network is left blank. STATUS: launched to US Coinbase One members on 22 Oct 2025 after a waitlist that opened in June 2025; no rate or tier change found between launch and 27 Sep 2026, and no change announced for the coming weeks. STILL TO VERIFY: the rates and fees table itself (FX, cash advance fee), whether an instant virtual card is issued before the metal card arrives, and whether any US state is excluded.

What's good and what to watch

Good

  • 2% back in bitcoin on every eligible purchase at the entry tier, with no cap on the 2% rate
  • Up to 4% on the first $10,000 a month for members holding $200,000+ on Coinbase (2.5% from $10,000, 3% from $50,000)
  • No card annual fee and no foreign transaction fee
  • American Express network protections: Retail, Return and Extended Warranty protection plus car rental and trip cover
  • 5% bitcoin back on travel booked in the Coinbase app, outside the $10,000 cap

Watch

  • Needs a paid Coinbase One membership: Basic annual at $49.99/yr is the cheapest route, and the monthly Basic plan does not qualify
  • US only (not US territories) and subject to a credit check; the secured fallback needs a USDC deposit from $100
  • The higher tiers depend on a 30-day average of assets held on Coinbase, so you must keep a large balance with one custodial exchange
  • Boosted rates stop after $10,000 of purchases a month; spend above that earns 2%
  • Rewards arrive in BTC, so their value moves with the bitcoin price
