Our own test

We're buying things with crypto cards in AUD, USD, EUR and GBP from October and comparing what each card takes with the mid-market rate. What this card actually charges will show here and in our Q4 report.

Where these numbers come from

Fold Debit Card's published terms, checked 27 September 2026. Where sources disagree we use the less generous reading.

Our research notes

VERIFIED 27 Sep 2026 (pass 2) against binding documents: the Fold Card Cardholder Agreement with Sutton Bank (effective 9 Dec 2024; short form disclosure and fee schedule), which the help centre links as the current agreement, and the Fold Terms and Conditions (last updated 14 Aug 2026: eligibility in s.2.1, Rewards Program in s.19, Fold+ Membership Terms and benefits table in s.19.8), plus Fold's help centre (articles updated 5 Feb to 22 Sep 2026), the official rewards and debit card pages, the 27 Jan 2026 customer letter and Fold Holdings' Form 10-Q for the quarter to 30 Jun 2026. MODELLED: two plans. Fold Card (free) earns 0% on card purchases: the help centre (22 Sep 2026) lists card spending rewards as available on the Fold+ plan only, the Terms give card boosts to Fold+ members only, and the card page says Fold+ members get cashback rewards. Fold+ costs $100 a year or $10 a month (Terms benefits table, cardholder agreement fee schedule, help centre 22 Sep 2026, 10-Q); the yearly price is modelled. It pays a guaranteed 0.5% in bitcoin on Visa Signature purchases that don't get a card boost (help centre and rewards page; the Terms define boosts but give no rate, so the 0.5% rests on official help and product pages). No monthly cap on spend or rewards; the Terms cap the rewards account balance at $10,000 at any time, so rewards must be withdrawn to keep earning. Rotating category boosts (up to 1.5%), merchant boosts (1% to 14%, or up to 15% per the rewards page), gift card rewards, ACH bill pay rewards, the daily prize wheel and the 90-day free trial are left out of the rates. FX: the Fold Card charges a flat $3.00 per foreign transaction and Fold+ $0 (fee schedule; Terms benefits table). The engine takes one percentage per card, so fx.rate is 0.03, the free plan's fee on a $100 purchase, following the Uphold $1.50 convention; it affects no open region because the card is US-only and US residents are modelled spending USD. No per-purchase conversion fee: purchases spend a prepaid USD balance. REGIONS: US only (Terms s.2.1: US citizens or lawful permanent residents living in the 50 states or DC with a Social Security number; ITINs not accepted). The cardholder agreement's older wording allows legal residents with a US tax ID; the newer Terms are stricter and are used. STATUS: live; the help centre (11 Sep 2026) describes applying in the app with no credit check. OPEN: Fold's 27 Jan 2026 customer letter said it would eliminate Fold+ subscriptions and refund pro-rated fees in Q1, but the 10-Q (filed 11 Aug 2026) says Fold still intends to eliminate the fees during fiscal 2026, and the Terms (14 Aug) and help centre (22 Sep) still list $100 a year or $10 a month; upgrading now goes through a support request. Fold also plans to start moving customer accounts to Lead Bank later in 2026 (press release filed with the SEC, 6 Aug 2026), so the card agreement may be reissued. When the fee goes, re-check whether the 0.5% rate is kept for all users and remodel as one free plan. Minimum withdrawal: the Terms say 30,000 sats; a July 2026 blog post says there is no minimum (binding Terms used). Verify the Fold+ fee and base rate again after Fold's next announcement.

What's good and what to watch

Good

  • No card, monthly or per-purchase fee on the free Fold Card
  • Fold+ pays 0.5% back in bitcoin on purchases that don't get a boost, plus rotating category boosts up to 1.5% and merchant boosts
  • Fold+ removes the $3.50 ATM fee and the $3.00 foreign transaction fee
  • Works as a bank-style account: direct deposit with account and routing numbers, and the USD balance is eligible for pass-through FDIC insurance at Sutton Bank
  • Fold+ members can earn up to 1.5% on ACH bill payments such as rent or a mortgage, up to the previous month's qualifying spend

Watch

  • The free card earns no bitcoin on card purchases; only the daily prize wheel and gift card rewards
  • Fold+ costs $100 a year (or $10 a month), so its 0.5% base rate only covers the fee above about $1,667 of monthly spend
  • The 0.5% applies only to Visa Signature purchases, not PIN debit transactions
  • Rewards are paid in bitcoin, a volatile asset, are locked for 30 days, and can be withdrawn once the balance reaches 30,000 sats
  • Fold says it will drop the Fold+ fee during 2026 but has set no date, so the terms are likely to change
  • US citizens and permanent residents only
  • Custodial: USD sits with Sutton Bank and bitcoin with BitGo
